I had gone on the Rara lake tour in October 2019. When I reached on the bank of Rara Lake after 2 hours of hiking from Talcha Airport. My eyes stay open for a while, it was beyond my imagination and expectation. It looks like a shining blue jewel sets in a ring of snowy peaks.
Facts about Rara Lake
Rara Lake is the most popular destination in western Nepal which lies in Mugu and Jumla Districts. It is the biggest freshwater lake in Nepal. This lake is also called Mahendra Tal which was named after late king Mahendra Shah in 2020. It lies at an altitude of 2990m in height from the sea level inside the Rara National Park which is the smallest national park in Nepal. It has a water surface of 10.8km2. Its maximum depth is 167m. It is 5.1km long and 2.7km wide. It is also known as the queen of the lake in Nepal. Rara lake changes its color three times a day.
How to get to Rara
There are lots of options for us to get to Rara Lake. Modes like by plane, by helicopter, by jeep, by local bus or by trekking. I took a Local bus from Kathmandu to Jumla and Jumla to Rara. It took 3 days to reach Rara Lake by Local bus. I went from KTM to Nagma in one bus and then I took the next bus to Rara Lake.
Nagma is the small bazaar of Jumla. It lies at the gateway to Mugu District. Rara lake is 87km away from Nagma. I didn’t afraid to die so I took the local bus. If you are afraid to die or you have a heart problem, then I don’t recommend you to take the roadway. It is because Karnali Highway is the most dangerous highway in the world.

It also offers you local foods like Dido, Sino, Kodho ko Roti(Millet Bread), and many more. It has its own authentic taste and flavor which is not found in any other territory. Local apple wine(Marfa) is also available here which can boost the level of the adventure of wine lovers. Moreover, the main plus point of staying in these hotels is that you can explore the sunrise view and sunset view from your bed. On the contrary, these hotels are more expensive than the hotels in Talcha Village. Talcha village is the small village where Talcha airport lies. It will take 2 hours to reach Rara lake from Talcha Village. There are lots of nonstar hotels and homestays in Talcha village. They were less expensive than the Daphe hotel and Village heritage and resort. They also provide quality services with mind-blowing hospitality.
If you are taking a bus ride to Rara then, there will be a bitter experience for you on the way. It is because these are only good hotels for lodging and fooding till Surkhet. From Surkhet to Rara, there is no good hotels for lodging and fooding on the way. But this is also the part of the adventure.
If you are planning to do the Rara lake trek then, there is less number of tea house on the trail. But there is no problem of fooding and lodging on the way. It is because the number of trekkers is also few in this virgin trekking trail. These tea houses can offer you mouth-watering local foods with authentic taste and flavor. On the other hand, the lodging facility is not good as other trekking trails like ABC and EBC. But, you can easily spend the night there.
Best Season For Rara Tour
Summer is quite pleasant but the winter is too cold. The best visiting time t the lake is September to October and April to May. From December to March, the temperature goes low below the freezing point and heavy snowfall occurs up to one meter. April to June is warm in this region. The monsoon season occurs between July and October which is short.
Things to be Remembered
There is no network of NTC and NCELL in Rara lake so, we have to take a sky phone sim. It has no network in this region. Furthermore, you should abide by each and every rule of the National Park. Otherwise, you will be fined. If you are planning for a jeep tour, you should take a 4WD vehicle because there are lots of routes on the way. You shouldn’t forget to carry first aid and medical kits while traveling.
